The European Free Alliance (EFA) Group in the European Parliament has elected Josep-Maria Terricabras of Catalunya as its new President. He will also become Vice-President of the EFA/Greens group.
Professor Terricabras was elected to the European Parliament as part of 'L'Esquerra pel Dret a Decidir' – an alliance of Catalan parties supporting independence for Catalunya and social justice. He is a professor of Philosophy at the University of Girona.
Vice-Presidents of the EFA Group will be MEPs Ian Hudghton (Scottish National Party) and Jill Evans (Plaid Cymru).
Jill Evans, the previous group President, tweeted that she was delighted to hand over the presidency to Mr Terricabras.
Speaking to the press Mr Terricabras said, “This is important not just for me or for the ERC but for the country, as Catalan independence will now have a significant position in the European Parliament."
EFA warmly congratulates Professor Terricabras on his election as group leader.
