Statement of the International Observers to the Turkish referendum

Observers express their deepest concern about the intimidating measures observed, and the lack of transparency experienced

EFA delegation formed of Vice-presidents Lorena Lopez de Lacalle and Ana Miranda, in a joined statement with other International Observers (from France, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Norway) to the Turkish referendum, stress that the referendum held last Sunday in Turkey did NOT comply with international conventions.

The group of observers underline that "the Constitutional Referendum was carried out under a State of Emergency thus undermining democratic standards and the rule of law; massive detentions of party members and journalists and even official representatives from opposition parties who were removed at the last minute and replaced by AKP in the polling stations" and that "there were not enough official observers from international organisations such as the Council of Europe or OSCE."

They also express their "deepest concern about the intimidating measures observed, and the lack of transparency experienced while monitoring the voting process, as should be guaranteed under standard democratic conditions."
