Martin Hell, former President of the Union du Peuple Alsacien (now Unser Land), passed away this weekend at the age of 86. Hell was an emblematic figure for the Alsatian autonomist movement who was dedicated to the cause for over 4 decades.
“People are just starting to wake up – we were already awake in the 70’s”, Hell explained in an interview in 2015, when election results had risen from 1% to 20% following a highly damaging territorial reform aiming to merge Elsass with Lorraine and Champagne.
In addition to his political struggle, he is the author of two books: “Le drame d’une colonisation”(2005) and “Rot un Wiss, des vendeurs, les vendus” (2011). “Rot un Wiss” (“Red and White”) refers to the Alsatian flag, which was banned by France after World War 1. The book explores Alsatian history, where Hell explains that Alsatians in fact never voted on their membership to France.
EFA is deeply saddened by Martin’s death and expresses its deepest condoleances to his family and his friends as well as to Unser Land.
