07.12.09 EFA asks the EU to mediate in the case of Aminatou Haidar. (07/12/2009)
The European Free Alliance says that the Presidency of the European Union does take its responsibility as far as it does not act as an international mediator in the case of Aminatou Haidar.
The spokeswoman of the BNG in Brussels and Vice-President of the European Free Alliance (EFA) denounces the lack of transparency of the Council, which does not allow entering representatives or officials of other EU institutions in the press room of the Council.
After having passed the ordinary security check and being seated in the conference room of the Council, Mrs. Miranda was thrown out by the security guards under the argument that she did not have a journalist/press card.
“This is the only institution of the European Union where this happens" denounced the nationalist representative who will be an MEP at the end of 2011, based on the agreement within the “Europe of the peoples” coalition.
Miranda said: "The problem is not that I have been thrown away, I am nobody, the real big problem is the content and the importance of this press conference where a discussion on the implementation of the Association Agreement of the European Union and Morocco is taking place, and in which the Minister will be questioned about the case of the human rights activist Aminatou Haidar."
The European Free Alliance represented by Ana Miranda as a Vice-president, denounces that the Presidency of the Council has not yet given a decisive step as a mediator in Haidar’s case, and deplores that the Council is absolutely subordinated to the interests of Morocco, which commits flagrant violations of human rights and, concretely in this case, prevents this activist from returning to the Aiúun to finally reunite with her children and family.
In this respect the EFA group, chaired by the President of the Western Sahara Intergroup, will present an urgency question on this issue to be voted in the European Parliament.
The European Free Alliance believes that the EU should take its responsibility and mediate in this humanitarian case that neither Spain nor Morocco have been able to resolve. In the same line, the EFA deeply regrets the sad health situation of Aminatou Haidar and supports from Brussels the dignity of her approach and firmness of her claims, which are the right of a person -which is also a mother- to return home.
