18.06.08 Diversity is threat to National French Identity (18/06/2008)
Jacobin narrow minded reactions from French senators
The French Senate has rejected a government proposal to add to Article 1 of the French constitution a paragraph that recognises the regional laguages as part of the national heritage.
The presidential majority party UMP, the centrists, the radicals, the communists and a few socialist dissidents voted in favour of the amendment that deleted this government proposal, while the socialists, the greens and some dissidents of the UMP votent against this deletion.
On the eve of this vote the Académie française , that plays an important role in French language policy, had qualified the government proposal to recognize regional languages as " a threat to national identity".
With the upcoming French Presidency of the EU, who claims to promote diversity, it worries EFA. President Nelly Maes said:
"One of the elements why more and more people turn their back to the EU is because they are not respected by centralist powers in their country and in Europe."
