EFA brings stateless nations even closer

The Catalan President and the Head of the Corsican government meet in Barcelona

A historic meeting took place yesterday in the Catalan capital, when Carles Puigdemont and Gilles Simeoni, the newly elected leaders of Catalonia and Corsica met for the first time. Alongside were also EFA President Francois Alfonsi, the Catalan Foreign Minister Raul Romeva and the State Secretary for European & International Affairs of the Catalan government Jordi Sole, who was also recently re-elected as EFA Secretary General in #Aiacciu16

The meeting lasted more than two hours and focused on enhancing the cooperation between the two nations in a regional and European level. More precisely, iajoint European initiative, bringing together Peoples and stateless nations and at the same time urging the EU to respect the right to self-determination, will be launched shortly by the 2 governments. An equally important initiative, related to sustainable development in the Mediterranean Sea, was also discussed. Due to its position and size, Catalonia could be the "locomotive" of such an effort that could include in its first phase, besides Corsica, Sardinia and the Balearic Islands. All regions with strong presence of EFA member parties.
