Yesterday's plebiscite elections in Catalonia gave unprecedented results: with an absolute majority in seats in the next parliament and government, the pro-independence parties obtained the mandate they had hoped for from the Catalan People.
The future parliament promised to kick-start a process of independence. It now has the legitimacy to do so, amplified even more by the very high levels of electoral participation. This is a victory for democracy, a victory for Catalonia and a victory for Europe. An irreversible process has started. It will be guided by the majority in the Catalan parliament and the future Catalan state will find its place within the Europen Union, where it belongs.
The European Free Alliance (EFA) congratulates JuntsPelSi, and especially Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya (ERC), the EFA member party in this coalition for a YES, for this initiation of the independence process. ERC played a pivotal role in this victory.
EFA calls for the EU to engage as from now with a process of dialogue and recognition taking into account this new Catalan democratic reality in order to lift the barriers imposed by the Spanish state. Democracy has to prevail, Europe should recognize a future Catalan state.
